Best Shows This Week: January 8 to January 14, 2018

The first week of the new year is always a slow one when it comes to the concert schedule, which is why we skipped doing a Best Shows This Week. But things are starting to ramp up this coming week, enough for a heavy list of shows worth checking out.

MONDAY, JANUARY 8

Lauren Ruth Ward, Liv Slingerland, YIP YOPS & more at The Echo, 8:30 PM, 21+, FREE

Lauren Ruth Ward is a local favorite who has been ramping things up as of late. Check her out as she kicks off her residency at The Echo where she will play free shows every Monday night this month.

The Eiffels, WOLVES, Emerson Star, Irene Green at School Night at Bardot, 7:30 PM, 18+, FREE with RSVP

After taking two weeks off, School Night is back with a solid bill this week.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 9

Jukebox The Ghost, Jupiter Winter at The Echo, 7:30 PM, *SOLD OUT*

I remember seeing Jukebox the Ghost several years ago and they played a cover of the classic jam “I Love You Always Forever” by Donna Lewis and I instantly became a fan. They’ve been quietly releasing dope music for years and have a sold-out gig at The Echo!

John Early, Morgan Bassichis, Amber Coffman (Dirty Projectors), Amanda Seales, Vanessa Bayer at The Satellite, 9 PM show, 21+, *SOLD OUT*

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 10

Nortec Collective Presents: Bostich & Fussible at Regent, 9 PM show, 18+ $20 advance, $27 day of

THURSDAY, JANUARY 11

Starcrawler at Amoeba Hollywood, 6 PM, free with purchase of new record

Starcrawler drops their debut album on January 11 (we’ll have a review posted here this week) and will be celebrating with a free gig at Amoeba in Hollywood which you can check out for free with purchase of their CD or vinyl. I caught them at School Night a few months back and was absolutely blown away by their stage presence — no wonder Ryan Adams is a mega fan and recorded their record.

Luna, Big Mother Gig at Moroccan Lounge, 8 PM, 21+, $25

FRIDAY, JANUARY 12

K. Flay, Sir Sly at Fonda Theatre, 9 PM, *SOLD OUT*

This is the best concert of the week as K. Flay and Sir Sly make up a killer alt rock double bill at the Fonda Theatre, which sold out! I caught both of these acts at Firefly Festival last year and am stoked to get to see them in the same place again.

Luna, Big Mother Gig at Moroccan Lounge, 8 PM, 21+, *SOLD OUT*

SATURDAY, JANUARY 13

Night Talks, Madi Sipes and the Painted Blue, Colyer at The Echo, 5:30-9 PM, $10 advance, $12 day-of

If you like your rock bands to sound like they could have come right out of the thick of the ’70s, local favorites Night Talks are right up your alley. This is a dope early-evening gig where you can get home by 10 PM (or even check out another show later) — I’ve always been impressed when seeing them live.

Meiko, Kat McDowell at Hotel Cafe, 6:30 PM, 21+, $15

Neon Indian (DJ set), Holy Ghost! (DJ set), Gigamesh at ExchangeLA, 10 PM, 21+, $20
