Clairo impresses a crowd of her peers at sold-out Roxy gig

Rising indie pop singer Clairo was at The Roxy on Monday night for the first of two sold-out gigs and it’s no wonder she’s becoming a star.

I first got introduced to Clairo (real name Claire Cottrill) via the oddest way — a Jenny Lewis story on Instagram. As many of you know, Jenny Lewis is my absolute favorite musician of all-time. She had shared a clip of “Pretty Girl” and I was hooked from there.

Clairo is often getting compared to fellow burgeoning teenage pop star Billie Eilish, and it was something that was heard often in the crowd as they waited for Clairo to take the stage. Clairo has some work to do to catch up with the stage confidence that Eilish has built, but you could see the potential is there for sure. You could tell there were some nerves based on the repetitious way she walked clockwise around the stage.

The crowd was a mixture of mostly teenage girls and boys, and a couple of dads along as responsible parents. Thankfully, these weren’t deafening screamers the way it often is at indie pop shows.

Clairo flexed her abilities as a musician by playing some guitar throughout the gig. She even dropped some dance moves while singing the tunes she wrote in her bedroom. At one point she invited “all the girls and gays” to the front of the crowd to get crazy and dance.

Favorites of the set included “Drown” (her collab with fellow young heartthrob Cuco), “Better” (her collab with SG Lewis), and of course the set-closing “4EVER”, my favorite jam of hers.

Overall, it was a pretty impressive showing from Clairo, who doesn’t have that many live shows under her belt but is selling out venues like The Roxy with ease. Check out some fan-shot footage of her show below, along with some awesome photos.
