FESTIVAL GALLERY: Music Tastes Good 2018

The third chapter of Long Beach festival Music Tastes Good 2018 is in the books.

Taking place for the second straight year at the beautiful Marina Green Park, the festival once again brought a wide-ranging demographic for headliners New Order and James Blake. Though it featured a couple of names that hit the festival circuit hard this year, it mostly leaned into a lineup of names that often get overlooked when it comes to festivals.

That allowed festival attendees to maybe discover some music they didn’t otherwise know. The food was also delicious, with this year’s Taste Tent not being restricted to VIPs and also allowing people to sample chefs’ work in $5 increments in many cases. I had a couple bo kho taco from Oakland’s Chef Sincere Justice (Mister Bolenca and Tacos Sincero) that were absolutely delicious.

But what I most enjoyed was getting to see some great musical acts in a more intimate setting. When I saw Janelle Monae for the first time at Outside Lands this August, I stood a football field away for her main stage set. At Music Tastes Good 2018, I was able to get within 20 feet of the stage and watch her mesmerize with her Prince meets Bruno Mars performance.

The same goes for musical icons New Order. They hardly tour anymore and they are a band I had never seen live. I was blown away by their show and they were clearly the biggest draw of the entire weekend.

Broken Social Scene brought out former member and current Metric lead singer Emily Haines to sing on a couple tracks, which was an awesome surprise.

Memorable sets from Santigold, Big Thief, Lizzo, and shame were among the other highlights. Check out our photographer Tim Aarons‘ awesome photos from the festival below!
