Julien Baker shares new song, signs to Matador

Indie singer-songwriter Julien Baker released one of the most powerful records of 2015 and toured all over the world last year. She’s keeping that momentum going early in 2017 as Matador Records announced Friday they’ve signed her to their label and will release a new 7” of hers in March.

The A-side of said 7” (out March 17) is “Funeral Pyre,” a song I’ve been lucky enough to hear performed live a handful of times – at SXSW in a church, at Shaky Knees, and at the El Reywhich was one of the best top-to-bottom shows I saw all year.

Baker’s style and prose is in the style of Elliott Smith – gutwrenchingly honest and raw. The new song “Funeral Pyre” follows her critically-acclaimed record Sprained Ankle, and we’ve only begun to see the potential of the 21-year-old singer. The B-side of the 7″ is “Distant Solar System,” another song from the Sprained Ankle sessions.
