Little Simz brings Phony Ppl along for moving ‘Tiny Desk’

I discovered British rapper Little Simz last June when she opened for the venerable Anderson Paak at the Theatre at the Ace Hotel. I was blown away by her performance, in which she brought to mind M.I.A. and Lauryn Hill with her sound. Little Simz was the latest to participate in NPR’s Tiny Desk series, and she brought along Brooklyn band Phony Ppl for a stirring three-song set.

The Lauryn Hill vibes were only accentuated by this intimate and stripped-down set. Listen to her perform songs “Poison Ivy,” “No More Wonderland,” and “Picture Perfect” from her incredible Stillness in Wonderland record, released in December. Little Simz would refer to the album as a concept record during her Tiny Desk set, saying it follows an Alice in Wonderland theme.

“My album is basically a concept album,” Little Simz would say before playing “Picture Perfect” to close her set. “It follows the theme of Alice in Wonderland, it’s called Stillness in Wonderland. And this is basically when I’m at my peak of the ill, when I’m enjoying it the most, and I’m having the most fun and it’s lit and I’m excited to be here.”

Los Angeles fans can catch Little Simz live at the Echoplex on Monday, March 20. Tickets are priced at $13.50 and are still available. Don’t miss out!
