COVER: Middle Kids turn blink-182 classic into folk ballad

Aussie three-piece Middle Kids have been on my radar since I first heard “Edge of Town” on a Spotify Discover Weekly playlist. They’ve just made a bigger splash with a twist on a pop-punk classic that will give you a wave of nostalgia.

Middle Kids recently turned in a cover of blink-182’s “All The Small Things”. Lead vocalist Hannah Joy sings the lyrics a more melancholy intent and it turns this fun song into a hard-hitter. The song is featured on the upcoming Amazon Original Acoustics Playlist (dropping September 8), alongside songs from Ella Vos, Beach Slang, and others. The playlist has previous featured Michelle Branch covering Radiohead, The Districts covering David Bowie, and more.

Give Middle Kids’ rendition of “All The Small Things” a listen below:

“We don’t play covers in our live set, but we are interested in the infinite discovery of what makes a ‘great’ song,” the band said about the cover, per KCRW. “In this recording, we were attempting to re-imagine a pop-punk classic as a sad country ballad. We kept the beautiful words and the melody, but changed instrumentation to bring out different emotion.”

Middle Kids have been on a roll ever since dropping their debut self-titled EP, which we reviewed. Great news: you can catch them in LA later this month!

Middle Kids will make their triumphant return to Los Angeles later this month with a September 28 show at the beautiful Teragram Ballroom. Tickets are priced at $16.00 and are on sale now. Opening the show are King Shelter. Doors are at 8 PM with the show at 9 PM.
