Warpaint’s Theresa Wayman drops new song from debut solo record

“I just got too, I just got too empty,” Warpaint guitarist and vocalist Theresa Wayman sings forlornly on the debut track from her upcoming solo record, which debuted on BBC Radio 6 with Lauren Laverne.

Wayman is putting out the record under the name TT — which will drop sometime this spring via LoveLeaks (presumably Wayman’s own label) and Caroline International — which just signed Warpaint to a marketing, promotion and distribution deal, per Musicweek. The album is called LoveLaws and is set to release on May 18.

The song is titled “Love Leaks” and features a slow build similar to some of my favorite Warpaint tracks, with serious trip-hop vibes. It opens with an electronic organ sounding intro before a wavy guitar riff floats behind Wayman’s vocals. Money Mark, famous for his work with the Beastie Boys over two decades, nabs a production credit on the track.

Additional production on the album comes from Wayman’s brother Ivan as well as Dan Carey (Kate Tempest, Bat for Lashes). Wayman plays almost all of the instruments on the album herself, with some additional support from Warpaint bandmates Jenny Lee Lindberg and Stella Mozgawa.

“I feel like we’re failing, I feel like I’m waiting on you,” Wayman sings in a more R&B rhythm than we’re used to hearing from her as a member of her art and psychedelic rock band Warpaint. It addresses the feelings of feeling helpless when a relationship you cared about is too far from saving.

The MusicWeek story also mentioned a bigger push from Caroline for Warpaint to garner bigger success in the States. This is amazing news because this is a band that should be much larger in this country than they are — they deliver some of the most consistently standout performances of any festival bill they play and are always billed lower stateside than bands they shouldn’t be. The release added that the band will likely drop a new album in 2019.

That leaves a little bit of time for the members of Warpaint to pursue their own creative projects for the time being. This first release from Wayman on her own is a good sign of things to come. I loved what I heard from Wayman’s side project with Hot Chip’s Sarah Jones called BOSS, but this is separate venture might be even more intriguing.

Wayman performed the new single “Love Leaks” as well as another album cut “I’ve Been Fine” in stripped-down fashion on Marvin Encore, check it out below!
