Pearl Charles dials up ABBA vibes on “Only For Tonight”

I haven’t been writing much here lately but had to whip something up as Pearl Charles dropped the latest single from her upcoming sophomore record Magic Mirror — out this Friday via Kanine Records.

“Only For Tonight” is the lead track from the record and my favorite of the batch. I’ve been listening to it often since getting sent an early album stream. It’s goot some serious ABBA disco vibes. This is the kind of music our parents listened to while doing illegal substances. Of course, the video is a whole vibe as well, really leaning into the disco feel of the tune hard. If you were a fan of the show LOST — this song would have fit perfectly in the season where they time traveled to the ’70s.

I’ve been a big fan of Pearl Charles for a couple of years but think Magic Mirror is a huge step forward for the singer. She’s moved beyond her folksy singer-songwriter genre and has added new dimensions. This record is an early contender for my favorite of 2021, and it should be one of yours as well. She has the co-sign of Valley indie rock queen Jenny Lewis, so you know it’s good.

Hoping we get to hear this tune and the rest of Magic Mirror live in concert in person sometime soon. For now, check out her live stream on the Rough Trade Instagram page! And don’t forget to buy the record when it comes out this Friday, January 15.
