WATCH: St. Lucia, BAIO cover Toto at The Wiltern

Tuesday night, I saw synthpop group St. Lucia at The Wiltern. It was the 12th time I’d seen them live, and they did something I’d never seen them do before.

Midway through their encore, they brought out opening act BAIO. Frontman Jean-Philip Grobler called it a special night, saying what they were about to do they’d only done once before. That would be a spirited and awesome cover of early ‘80s hit “Africa” by Toto. This wouldn’t be the first ‘80s throwback of the night – BAIO covered INXS’ “Need You Tonight” during his set. You can watch that video here.

St. Lucia delivered a memorable set packed full of songs from their latest album Matter. I love how Grobler always has his hair being blown by a fan at the front of the stage like he’s Beyonce. The chemistry between him and the rest of his band is spectacular.

It was indeed a special performance by St. Lucia. They also featured an amazing horn section throughout their set. It’s clear every time they come to LA, they try and bring something special to the mix. Tuesday night was no different.

Catch St. Lucia on tour when they come to your town! You won’t regret it.
